Focus on Acupuncture What is acupuncture? Acupuncture is a system of healing which has evolved over the last 2,500 years. It involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body. Each point has a specific action. By using a combination of points tailored to an individual, acupuncture can effect change at a physical, emotional or spiritual level. How does acupuncture work? Acupuncture is based on the theory of Qi. According to ancient Chinese medical thought, Qi flows through meridians or channels within the body. These channels run mainly longitudinally through the body and connect the whole body. The channels can be compared to a tree. The trunk and main branches define the main structure, whilst ever finer branches, twigs and leaves spread out to every part. Ultimately there is no single cell that is not supplied by the channels. When the flow of Qi is interrupted an energetic disharmony within the body ensues and illness may result. Acupuncture promotes the smooth flow of Qi in the body and thus has a regulatory effect allowing the body to return to its energetic balance. Does acupuncture hurt? The needles used for acupuncture bear little resemblance to those used in injections and blood tests. They are very fine and flexible. All needles are sterile and used only once. When the needle is inserted the sensation is often described as a tingling or dull ache. What does the treatment involve? During the initial consultation you will be asked questions about the symptoms you are experiencing, your medical history and about other aspects such as sleep, diet and your emotional state. Your tongue will be looked at and your pulse will be taken. This information leads to a diagnosis and from this a treatment plan can be determined. How will you feel after acupuncture? It is quite common to feel tired after treatment, this is usually more pronounced after the first visit. There may be mild tiredness after subsequent visits. It is a good idea not to do too much after your first acupuncture session. How often will you need to receive treatment? The number of treatments will depend upon the nature, length and severity of your complaint. For acute problems you may only need one treatment, many chronic problems may be resolved with a series of between five and ten treatments whereas other chronic conditions may benefit from treatment given over several months. ![]() |
